You’re starting the college process and everyone wants to know: “What do you want to study?” or “What career are you interested in?” Only problem is, you don’t know yet! The good news is: it’s okay! Campus Bound can help with that.
First things first: do you have to know what you want to study before you go to college? The short answer is no. The data varies, but roughly 40-50% of students enter college as “undecided.” And an estimated 75% of students change their major at least once before graduation. With data like that, it’s clear that young adults have a hard time deciding what they want to do “for the rest of their lives.” The decision seems so important, yet so difficult to make.
Despite the fact that many students have a tough time choosing a major, the benefits of deciding, or at least narrowing down the field, at the beginning of the college search process can be quite beneficial. It’s not essential that you know exactly what you want to major in, but knowing, for example, that you want to study science, can guide you to finding a school with a strong science program. In another recent Campus Bound blog, we outlined the benefits of finding the right school the first time around and the difficulties that can be involved with having to transfer. So, having some academic direction as you begin the college search process can be very helpful.
For students who are at a complete loss about what to study in college, Campus Bound can help! As part of our standard and comprehensive college counseling packages, students now have access to YouScience, a thorough career discovery program. YouScience is a revolutionary approach to helping individuals find and explore careers that match both their interests (what they love to do) and aptitudes (what they do naturally well). Once the assessment is completed by a student, and the results are in, Campus Bound Counselors go over the results and help students make informed decisions about their education and career.
Campus Bound also makes YouScience and a career counseling session available to students who work with us on an hourly basis.
If you are having trouble deciding what to study in college, want counseling around which career makes sense for you, and/or want to take the YouScience Career Assessment, contact Campus Bound today!
